Pauline Oliveros
- How does Oliveros’ idea of deep listening
challenge the way you typically give attention?- My attention span is definitely not the same as it used to be. My mom is right, it is because of that phone. When I’m listening to something I’m so used to ignoring it because I’m usually multitasking. I believe it’s also because I’m so desensitized to hearing many things, new and old information, all the time that my brain can’t handle all of it. My ears might hear everything but my brain picks and choose what I listen to. So when I’m “listening”, I’m only hearing not paying attention. According to Pauline I require focus and with focus needs curiosity. Which is true, if I care enough, you have my full attention.
- In what ways might listening through your whole
body, or approaching sound as a form of play and
research, change your understanding of
connection, communication, or creativity?- I’ve always believed in the idea that inspiration is all around us. If you stop and breathe to smell the flowers you will notice things you have never noticed before. Creativity comes easy because inspiration is everywhere. We then start to make connections with things we’ve seen or heard before. This all comes naturally with curiosity, which is human nature.
