Grip Frailty

3/10/26 7:02am – 3/16/26 11:36am

Conceptual Portrait: Proposal

(Perform an experiment or task, and present the results as the portrait) Blank piece of paper, brought with me everywhere for 6 days. The creases, folds, tears, and stains as the portrait.

A portrait of how carefully or carelessly I treat objects

A portrait of wear created by ordinary life

Artist inspiration – Kelly Mark ‘In & Out’

Kelly Mark’s In & Out is a durational self-portrait where the artist repeatedly enters and exits her home, transforming movement into a record of presence, absence, routine, and the passage of time.

in all her glory!

My dad used to always say to me “Rebecca, slow down and be aware of your surroundings”. (Y’all can NOT call me Rebecca srry xx). Alas, I was too fast, young, and untameable. Nowadays my back tweaks out every day,,, soooo I could use some slowing and/or awareness of my surroundings.

😃

Grip Frailty is a documentation and test of my slow awareness. The creases, stains, and tears reveal how much attention (or lack of attention) I give to objects during everyday life. By carrying a blank sheet of paper everywhere for five days and allowing it to be folded, crushed, stained, or forgotten, the work becomes a record of the small acts of carelessness and care that shape my daily behaviour. The portrait reveals my relationship to objects and surroundings through the wear I leave on them.
