One Feat Three Ways
Video One – The One Shot – Glut
Video Two – The Edit – Delivered to Perfection
Video Three – The Animation – Are You Not Happy?
For this project, we chose to pick an everyday action that we could use to illustrate the strain of the over-sexualization of women. In order to make our point, we used the costume, makeup, props, camera angles and editing to show the vulnerability of the subject. The motion of simply eating an ice cream cone steadily turns into an intimate and uncomfortable experience of the viewer being forced to over sexualize the subject. You are meant to move through her discomfort with her, both feeling like you are in her position and like somehow, simultaneously, you are the reason she is trapped there. I urge you to sit through the one shot; it is deeply uncomfortable, but the lesson you learn in being put in such a position of power is unlike anything I have experienced before. It is a feeling no one should have, feeling like you have power over someone else.
The second video takes you more through the artistic vision of what is happening. it does not leave that same space for you to feel responsible but acts more as an ASMR abject that makes you feel weird in your skin. The editing done by Maggie Clark is stark and provides you more insight into how the subject feels. The editing choice of the overlapping sounds and videos brings you into that moment as if it were a memory you have.
Finally, the animation uses visual symbols of feminism, internal struggle, and childhood to illustrate both the internal fight of the subject to please the viewer along with the societal pressure forced on her. Here are some of the intended symbols within the animation:
- The organic shapes in multiple forms and colours extending in and out of her heart or “soul”
- The layered colours “grabbing” onto the over sexualized parts of her body.
- The child-like drawn flowers growing and suddenly dying as if stopped out or run over to show the sudden crush sexualization has on a young girl.
- The yellow sun that engulfs the subject and once again brings attention back to those sensitive areas.
- The words “ARE YOU NOT HAPPY?” messily written out and paused on for a moment to bring the viewer back to the lens of responsibility for the subject’s experience.
- The loop slows down to encourage the viewer to think critically about the question being asked
- The re-winding and looping of the animation is to force the viewer to relive it again and again without choice, as the subject does.
