Delcy Morelos – Ombligo

About the Work
Delcy Morelos’s work Ombligo is a large installation made from sisal rope with soil and natural materials. The structure hangs from the ceiling and stretches across the whole room. The concrete area around the sculpture contrast with the sculptures organic materials while the only light is the natural light coming through the windows.
How It’s Relevant to Me
I find this work interesting because of the unusual natural materials used to create the artwork. This artwork relates to my own research interest and practices because it encourages me to work with different materials and to think about the specific textures and other qualities the materials have. I also find that this work pushes me to think about the placement, lighting, and surrounding of my works.
What I Noticed, Learnt, and Took Away
One things I noticed about this work was that it was huge and that it was only hanging from the ceiling. The art work gave off a feeling of enclosure like there was supposed to be something inside of it. I also noticed the contrast between the smooth concrete and the rough natural texture of the work. When reading about the context of the artwork I learnt that Ombligo means navel and that it is connected to the themes of birth, nourishment and our relation with the earth.
Bharti Kher

About the Work
Bones is an exhibit made by Bharti Kher featuring an assortment of sculptures made from repurposed materials. Some of these pieces include wooden structures, geometric forms, ropes, metal objects, and human like figures. The sculptures are also arranged on a wooden platform creating a contrast between the smooth and soft colour of the floor and the rough multi coloured sculptures on display.
How It’s Relevant to Me
I find that the Bones exhibit is relevant to me because of the way she uses everyday objects to create unique forms. I am inspired by artist that can transform familiar objects into something using different shapes, textures, and arrangements. Her use of everyday object really inspires me to try to experiment with everyday materials in my own projects and to try and understand how different materials can work together.
What I Noticed, Learnt, and Took Away
When looking at this artwork I noticed that there was a contrast between all of the sculptures and how each one was carefully balanced and arranged. When reading about the artworks and watching the video about how Kher broke apart and reassembled objects helped me understand the importance of transformation as a part of her practice. This exaction also brought to light the balance, instability, and the relationships between different objects and how they can communicate ideas without needing a clear explanation.
