Main Idea
Our inspiration was to show an everyday action of a person catching an object. Our idea was to show through the action of catching objects that we often take on more than we can chew. In our videos the objects are often dropped representing a physical action of taking on more than we can and easily getting overwhelmed.
What We’re Trying to Communicate
In this work we are trying to communicate a feeling of being overwhelmed and faced with task after task, in this case objects. When the objects are missed or dropped it represents the times we struggle and are completely overwhelmed. In our videos when we show multiple objects in our hands we are also representing that we actually can handle a lot but there is almost always a breaking point.
How Our Idea Changed
Our idea didn’t change in the action but more so in the meaning behind it. Our original idea for the meaning was that we wanted to see how much a person could handle, how many objects they could catch. We didn’t completely change our idea but we decided that the meaning was really about at what point the objects become too much.
Challenges We Had
When filming we had a couple of issues, some of them being trying to find the right lighting and other problems like staying serious. One of our lighting issues was when we had filmed in the sculpture studio and were only able to bring and barely fit in the portable light set. We figured that since the room was white the light would bounce off the walls and the space up more but we quickly realized that the lights we had were not nearly strong enough to light up the whole room. We also had an issue with keeping a calm expressionless face while we were filming. Both Grace and I had quite a few moments where we would get hit in the face by an object and completely lose composure, ruining the shot. One of the last issues we had was trying to figure out how to best represent the meaning behind our action while making the edited video as we had little to no experience and were trying to put as much meaning in the video as we could.
