Experiences of Listening
How does Oliveros' idea of deep listening challenge the way you typically give attention? In what ways might listening through your whole body, or approaching sound as a form of play and research, change your understanding of connection, communication, or creativity.
Pauline Oliveros’ idea of deep listening is that listening is more than just hearing sounds, but becoming deeply immersed in the sounds around us. Connecting with our whole bodies, instead of hearing music we are listening to it. This goes against how I usually give attention, as I tend to listen the most to peoples words, and the more subtle meanings behind them, and in music I tend to connect the most to the lyrics. However I think that listening with our whole bodies can allow us to notice things like rhythm, movement, and the messages in silences. The process of listening with your body can deepen my understanding of people, as a person can say a lot through things like body language, breathing, and tone of voice.
