1 Kilometre

Proposal

While I was thinking about what I wanted to do for this project I was very stumped. I did not want to pick anything that was too cliche or unoriginal. I don’t have a car and so walking and commuting is inevitable. While I walk, I almost always have my earbuds in and am listening to my music. I thought that I could walk a kilometre from my house and track the music that I listen to. I liked this idea because it is simply a part of my everyday routine, but it also can be totally unique. Not all songs are the same length and/or by the same artist. Each kilometre and songs that I listen to is curated based on my mood, feeling, and interests of the day.

Execution

I have a map showing my walking route from my house to the Heffernan Street Bridge. This is one of my favourite Guelph landmarks. The distance is 1.1km and I will photograph my process, capturing the things I look for while I am walking. This could be a landmark, building, garden, etc. I will then put all of the photos together and pick a song that I think suits it best. Although I have meaning behind the songs that are picked, the audience can scan the code to listen. With this, they can interpret their own feelings and ideas.

Process

I ended up taking more pictures than what I had originally anticipated. I took pictures from different angles and worked with the settings on my phone’s camera. I even took pictures of the plaques that are on either end of the bridge. After taking all of my pictures and sifting through what I wanted, I went looking through my playlists and songs. I wanted to pick something that I feel connected to the image I have taken.
