AGG Field Trip

illustrating, describing and responding to two artworks. How are these works relevant to your own research interests and practice? What did you notice, learn, or take away from the experience of the works in the gallery?

Since Time Immemorial, by Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun

The piece by Yuxweluptun, is so captivating to me. His work is relevant to me because I am really interested in the artist’s touch and paint strokes. I did some more research and read articles of Yuxweluptun, in one he said,

“I paint on a reservation, to feel this perspective on life—the racist segregation of Canadian history, the so-called “Indian problem.” I will paint you, O Canada, for all your atrocities face my paint, for they are part of my life.” https://lawrencepaulyuxweluptun.com/assets/Land_Spirit_Power.pdf

Reading that and then looking at the piece I feel the power in the painting. Him saying you can ignore what you have been doing to native people but you will not be able to ignore my paintings makes the vibrancy and movements come alive in this painting. I noticed the attention to detail and the bold vibrancy of the colours allow them to feel like its jumping off the canvas right in front of you. The smoke for me is such a tiny detail but makes such a huge difference. It really pulls the viewer in allowing them to analyze the painting a lot closer and visualize the brush strokes and see the touch of the artist. From this painting It truly made me realize that native and indigenous people are still angry and they have every right to be but Canada and others has continually pushed them away or shut them up so that people now and days don’t think its still a problem. But it is, and indigenous art is even more important now as their culture has slowly started to fade out.

The piece I can’t focus when you’re watching me or ICFWYWM by Devlin Macpherson Quickly caught my interest. His work immediately draws me in and makes me feel inspired. He took art in a direction that for me is new and different in a way I haven’t seen art before. His ideas of not doing a easy thing like a painting but yet actually challenging the interaction with this art piece is really inspiring and is something i could see in my own future art works. A way to touch, interact, and inspire the audience when they see my work. I think his meaning behind it and his ideals are interesting for me, as mental health has always been an overall theme for me in my artwork. I think for me art has always been my way of expressing myself especially in the mental health form as sometimes art does the speaking for the words you don’t have. His artwork truly challenges me and makes me think in ways I don’t tend to think. The industrialization of a machine has always had no interest to me but in his piece I almost felt like I was that machine. Like I was in school and a teacher is standing over your back just waiting for you to mess up and make a mistake. I felt the anxiety this machine was having from being watched and it truly inflicted emotions in me that I have never felt for a piece of art. From this artwork I. truly took away how important it is to have a piece that does the talking for what your trying to convey without even reading the writing for this piece I was able to feel a lot of emotions and make my own connections. Also His own website has all his information but he also managed to once again engage the audience by having his website be interactive by the ability to hold the screen and make different shapes and then rest the canvas if needed.
