Portrait proposal
1. Draft your idea – explain the system or rule
you’ll use I want to use the letters I have collected from my boyfriend to speak about our relationship and commitment to each other. The rule I’m using is that the letters I have collected must be from my boyfriend from the last two years, and the documentation of them can’t be the same in the two scans.
2. Name an artist reference that
inspires your thinking
An Artist that I found inspired my thinking is an Artist called Song Dong. He explores a lot of personal memories through collections of items and presents them in big installations. One of my favourite pieces that he did that really helped to inspire me is called “Waste not,” which explores a hoarding of objects from his mom that creates memories. His work was made from objects that his mother had saved for decades. It speaks about who his mom is through all the household objects. He shares that it speaks of her trauma experiences and family. memories, as some items have been passed down to her, which she has managed to keep and save.
This inspires my work as I am not a hoarder per se, but there are things like letters that I feel need to be kept safe and protected because they are so important to me, and I feel it speaks to certain moments in time and to my relationship overall.
3. Include an image (of your artist reference or
inspiration)
