“Love as a excuse”
Description
In my own relationships, I’ve begun to come to a realization that the words “sorry” and “love” or “I love you” don’t mean what they used to. These words in my life have almost lost all their meaning. It’s like I’m desensitized to the words, and hearing them doesn’t evoke the emotions I feel they should. I found “I love you”, and “I’m sorry” have become excuses to excuse a person’s actions. Even in my friends lives I have seen them Be treated like garbage but once someone had said that they were sorry or i love you my friend had forgiven them. My audio project brings attention to this problem of using these once meaningful words, to now be a repetition of used excuses to try and justify a person’s unjust actions. I believe this audio makes the audience truly reflect and think on the meaning of these words and what they actually should mean vs what they have been used to excuse.
How did I go about doing the project? Time was definitely against me on this project as I did my brainstorm on Monday, filmed on Tuesday and then edited early Wednesday morning before the critique. For my brainstorming, which is in the picture at the top, I was stuck on the idea of repetition. I wanted to make something interesting, something that evokes emotion for me. Recently, it’s been when people say things that they don’t mean as an excuse for their behaviour. I love you, and I’m sorry was something my mind kept coming back to. I thought combining them would make for an interesting composition. I set a rule that I wanted to do one take, so that these reactions and our tones were original and true to how we were feeling. I got my boyfriend to sit down with me, and I put the microphone in the center between us. We both looked away from each other so that we wouldn’t know when the other person was going to speak, but would just go with what felt natural. At first, it felt silly and light-hearted, and then I felt myself getting more emotional and seriously thinking about what we were saying to one another.
