Audio Assignment

This audio contains a combination of found and recorded audio. I wanted to replicate the intensity and overwhelming feeling of being raised in a home that had familial conflicts.

As I grew up with Russian as my first language, and the main one spoken at home, I felt that it was important for me to include it in this piece. The English-spoken parts reflect that my brother and I would speak to each other in English and our parents in Russian. Additionally, the English parts are from an argument that my brother and I had back in 2021.

The Russian parts were taken from a show called Воронины (Voronini), which is a show my mom and I would watch together that I always found partially accurate to what was happening in my household, especially when it came to the arguments.

A common tactic that I used as a child (and even now) was to hum to myself as a way to calm my nervous system. I would also sing the I Love You song from Barney that I heard in school, and I used it as a form of reassurance to myself that while there is turmoil in my house, there is still love, regardless of whether I felt it or not.

While this piece was hard for me to make, emotionally, it was also very meaningful. I was able to recreate a feeling that was so common to me, but I can now view it with a more healed lens.
