Field Trip Art Gallery of Guelph
Question: How are these works relevant to your own research interests and practice? What did you notice, learn, or take away from the experience of the works in the gallery?

Wilson. M, and group. (2025). Yancey. [marten hide, industrial wool felt, wool roving (wet and needle felted), shoelace, embroidery thread, imitation sinew, conductive thread, microprocessor, and wood]. Art Gallery of Guelph . Guelph, Ontario, Canada
First off I would like to just give my thoughts on the piece. I was intrigued by the use of touch sensitive wiring to make the speakers work I thought it was such a good idea especially since its stretched in a drum like structure. The sound coming from within the hide like a drum just adds another layer of authenticity onto the piece. I also want to praise the map on the hide as it was incredibly insightful getting to see the terrain of what the residents go through in terms of distance. I think putting it on the inside of the animal gives the impression someone knows the map inside and out which is incredibly layered perspective thinking.
Now that my thoughts about the piece have been conveyed I would like to answer the questions. This piece is relevant to my own research interests and practice as I have been thinking about ways to make my art more interactive as I believe its easier to catch a viewers attention. By add more sensory elements the viewer is deeper engaged to the artwork making it stay in there minds more. I have been adding music to some of my pieces to help boost atmosphere of the piece as most of my pieces are story telling pieces. My takeaway/what I have noticed from this exhibition on the first floor which this piece, is for one the amazing culture showcased and how they sustain there environment and how they are thinking about this regularly instead of as with our culture having to be brung up by others for people to realize something is wrong.

First I will talk about how this is relevant to my own research interests and practice. Its relevance to my own practice/ interests falls within what is mentioned on the description of the piece. The influence of the audience which I can contest myself has a big part in my work as when I am making a art work I am also thinking how others will interrupt the work causing me to get nervous when I presume something can be taken badly. I loved the idea of using the robot to make rectangles until it sees someone because it reminds me of my own childhood of being a total introvert and having extreme social anxiety. In a way the robot reminds me of well me, which is why the piece is so compelling to me and I am sure others who have felt social anxiety feel the same. In my personal artwork I usually talk about fear. I think the fear of being precieved will be a great thing to research more so I can add it as an element to some of my works in the future. What I learned from this exhibition is the idea of reusing an old technology for a different purpose. I think in general there is a lot of electronic waste of otherwise fine working products, which was even talked about in the exhibition and I think its a great idea to give these old computers a second life so they can be used to the end of their lifespan rather than thrown away. To reiterate there is to much waste of technology that we just throw out a perfectly use-able phones even a phone purchased a year ago to move on to the latest phone with new features. I think it is important to bring this up as I think it goes dormant on a lot of folks just how much waste is accumulated that way with this pattern of thinking and I am glad that someone is talking about it.
