The Separate World of Music
Artists: Mark, Anne David
This series of videos was a representational piece on how we react to different types of music. The series of videos each focuses on different aspects of reaction. The gesture was putting on the headphones which each time it was equipped the song would change. The blind gestures/unconscious reactions to the music clips were what was the main focus of these videos. To make sure there was a stark contrast in the initial reactions. We conjured a playlist that had a few horrible to listen to songs as well as songs that Anne herself liked. This created a good contrast in the video and allowed the viewer to easily gauge her reactions. Each video plays a part in a larger whole the first raw video focuses on the reaction, the edited video allows the viewer to now hear some of the audio that was in the first clip giving more context to the reactions and the third video showcased the first gesture/movement which is often the purest reaction because its the reaction that doesn’t have any listening fatigue associated to it.
This work appreciates and brings your attention to the expression of others. This work allows a viewer to interrupt and reciprocate the actor Anne’s subtle expressions when listening to a playlist. This work also intends to bring focus to the emotions of others in an attempt to get people to pay attention to each others subtle expressions to better understand each others emotional states.

Image of setup
Here is a photo of our setup which was the camera set up at arms distance from Anne. Anne would then take the headphones off the camera lens which was holding them. This was in order to not make the action of getting the headphones too jarring and more natural like Anne picked them up herself which was the case.
Short Summary of Progression of the Assignment
After filming the Raw video which was a one shot in order to show real and authentic reactions from Anne we started filming other scenes in different places to use for editing. We even filmed at different angles but was later scraped because they didn’t allow the shots to transition easy during editing. We filmed a bunch of shots in different areas mostly around school but some we’re in public in order to shown drastic changes in scenery that one reflected the song and clearly showed a change in background. In most shots Anne was given the music to listen to again in order to get her to react again even if its subdued due to her already hearing it once. On the note of the songs a playlist was made from some of Anne’s favourite songs, one of marks and a different selection of songs that attempted to be diverse in musical genres.
Summery of Editing Process (My Part)
The editing started with Mark editing and putting together about four of the scenes we filmed that day in class which was to show be what he was thinking about how the editing should go. I then took the file home and begun putting everything in and seeing what needed to be done. I muted the original audio as it was to different in sounds and volume fun fact I switched in audio (seen in the edit) with a voice memo of just outside white noise for room tone. After all of them were put together I realized we had to many clips that would go over the time limit so in class, I met with our group showed them a rough copy I produced and discussed what should be dropped to make the time we cut the car scene and the blank wall/green screen scene because they were both not that good quality meaning we would have to redo them so not to add more to our plate we dropped it. After the meeting I went back removed the scenes and begun to move stuff around, drop the mentioned clips and started tweaking the timing of the clips to be just right.
